Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)
Starring Leslie Howard was the first celluloid Pimpernel.
In this film Merle Oberon played Lady Marguerite, Nigel
Bruce was the Prince of Wales and Raymond Massey was well
cast as the evil Chauvelin. A big-screen stab at the Pimpernel
by old-style Hollywood. A dry and brittle attempt that has
all the cute and quaint - but annoying - traits of 1930s
Hollywood. Still, Howard plays the dandy well and Oberon
is quite glamorous onscreen and this screen version of the
literary classic is generally regarded as one of the more
Raymond Massey as the wicked Chauvelin.
